What is stress and how to lower it – Part 1

I was recently reading an article on the subject of stress and how our work lives have changed the way we handle our own internal stress. You can read more on the link below.

Why stress is dangerous – and how to avoid its effects

It makes for very interesting reading and one that can help people who suffer from stress and not able to control it. Our work environment has changed over the years to include less physical work and more using the ‘brain’. This has manifested into higher level of stress, disorders, diabetes, blood pressure etc.

One of the important areas it touches on is what is called ‘rumination’ which by definition means to ‘think too deeply’. This can have the negative effect on stress especially if one replays an emotional situation over and over again. I think, we all know that common sense dictates that we take a pragmatic view of any situation not matter how good or bad it is. However, this is not the case especially when we humans are wired to behave emotionally and erratically. I believe this is where we can really take hold of ourselves and shape our lives the way we want it.

Perception is also an indicator of stress levels. If we do not have the correct perception of the world as we and everyone else see it, then we are likely to be out of sync when it comes to dealing with other people. Our ideals, values and internal guidance are dictated by these perceived values that we have of the world around us. This can take on a solid foundation on the personalities of people depending on their circumstances and environment and can be difficult to unshackle later in life.

I believe, only through introspection can one start to gain a better hold on their lives and control their stress levels. Sometimes criticizing other people’s beliefs and values can only embolden their thinking and position when it is intended to open their eyes. Change always starts from within.

In the next part of this topic, I want to show you one way how to control these levels of stress.
